The railway project includes five states. It is divided into seven sections, of which six cover the Yucatan Peninsula. It will have 20 stations and 14 bus stops. Here, the map with the route of the Mayan Train updated to 2023.
Where will the Mayan Train route go through? The railway project includes five states in the Southeast of Mexico, along 1,554 kilometers of track. It is divided into seven sections, of which six cover the Yucatan Peninsula. The route will have 42 trains, which will make stops at 20 stations and 14 stops.
It is worth mentioning that although at first it was said that the transport would enter cities such as Campeche, Mérida and Playa del Carmen, this was modified with the passage of time and the injunctions and complaints filed by residents of the areas.
Next, the breakdown of each of the sections of the Mayan Train, as well as the cities through which it will pass, and what some of its stations will be like. For greater detail, we offer a map of the route, according to the announcements made at the conferences of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in 2023.

Section 1 of the Mayan Train: From Palenque to Escárcega
Section 1 of the Maya Train covers 226 kilometers from Palenque, Chiapas, to Escárcega, Campeche. The route passes through seven municipalities in Chiapas, Tabasco and Campeche. It will have a workshop and garage for service and storage of the trains in Escárcega, as well as a maintenance base for the track in Tenosique.
Passengers will be able to get on and off at four stations:

What will the first station of the Mayan Train be like in Palenque?
The Mayan Train station in Palenque will have a wide roof, with inclination and various heights. Its four open sides allow cross ventilation from all wind directions. In front of it, a circular tree-lined square is planned and in front of it the construction of the new municipal palace is planned. It will also have a hotel with 160 rooms.
Section 2 of the Mayan Train: From Escárcega to Calkiní
Section 2 of the Mayan Train covers 234 kilometers from Escárcega to Calkiní in Campeche. For the trains there will be a garage in San Francisco de Campeche and a maintenance base for the track in Edzná.
This section includes two stations and three bus stops. The stations of this line will be in:
edzná
San Francisco de Campeche.
The bus stops will be located at:
Carrillo Port
tenabo
Hecelchakan.
In San Francisco de Campeche the station will facilitate the connection between Campeche and Yucatan. Passenger demand will be intermediate. In Edzná there will be one of the six Mayan Train Hotels that will be in the area.
Section 3 of the Mayan Train: From Calkiní to Izamal
Section 3 of the Maya Train links Calkiní, Campeche, with Izamal, Yucatán. It is a length of 159 kilometers that crosses 15 municipalities of both states. The stations in this section will be in:
Teya, near Merida
izamal.
There will be stops at:
Calkiní
maxcanu
uman
Tixkokob.
The Mayan Train route will not directly enter the city of Mérida, however, there will be a connection through the IE-Tram, an electric bus system, from the stop in Umán and the Teya station to the Gran Parque La Plancha, in the center of the Yucatecan capital.
Where will the Mayan Train stations be in Yucatan?
From the stations of Section 3 of the Mayan Train in Yucatan, a garage and a maintenance base are being built in Teya, and connectivity is strengthened with the Campeche and Mérida airports.
The Izamal station will be located in the south-west area of the city and “will form part of a new tourist and service neighborhood” of that municipality. “The passenger demand for this station will be low and will have a tourist character, considering a scheme of 3 tracks and 2 platforms in the station.”
Section 4 of the Mayan Train: From Izamal to Cancun
Section 4 of the Mayan Train has 239 kilometers of electrified double track from Izamal to Cancun and passes through nine municipalities in Yucatan and Quintana Roo. The whereabouts of section 4 of the Mayan Train will be at:
Chichen Itza
Valladolid
Cancun Airport.
Add as whereabouts:
New Xcan
Leona Vicario.
The Mayan Train station in Chichén Itzá will be in high demand and the design was in charge of the firm of Ana Elena GayAranda. It will serve as an “access portal to the archaeological site.” It will have an open-air reception plaza that, through a series of routes, invites visitors to live different experiences. The structure of the station is shaped, conceptually, by the body of the serpent that represents the transition from contemporary life to Mayan mysticism. A hotel will also be located in the area.
The Valladolid station was designed by Oficina de Arquitectura PLUG, based in Mérida. The work is inspired by the shade of native vegetation. The protagonist of the structure is a linear corridor that will be used as a lobby, through which the pedestrian flow will be directed and distributed to pass to the various sections of the place.
In Nuevo Xcán, Quintana Roo, a bus stop designed by the Gabriela Carrillo Architecture Workshop and Biopolis will be located. In the space, priority was given to the vegetation of the area, so that between the construction space was left for gardens and trees, which come out of the place through skylights. The cobbled pavement of the main road will be made of limestone and the secondary roads, as well as viewpoints, will be made of sascab.
Section 5 of the Mayan Train: From Cancun to Tulum
Section 5 of the Mayan Train runs from the Cancun airport to the new air terminal being built in Tulum, a route that covers 111 kilometers of territory in Quintana Roo. There will be maintenance bases in Puerto Morelos and Chemuyil.
The northern part of the section goes from Cancun to Playa del Carmen (43.3 kilometers) and the southern part connects Playa del Carmen with Tulum (67.7 kilometers). Section 5 South “is unique because more than 70 percent of the road will be a raised viaduct to protect the karstic soil, cenotes, caverns and underground rivers in the area,” said Javier May Rodríguez, general director of Fonatur.
The stations of section 5 of the Mayan Train will be at:
Puerto Morelos
Carmen beach
Tulum.
Of the stations in this section, the design of the one in Tulum has already been announced, which will be located in the military air-naval base, to the northeast of the urban sprawl of the municipality. Road access is adequate from the Chetumal-Cancún highway.
The estimated passenger demand is high and of a tourist nature, considering a scheme of 5 tracks and 2 platforms in the station. The concept of the project is an organically shaped architectural fabric with wide openings in order to cause cross ventilation, according to the Government.
Section 6 of the Mayan Train: From Tulum to Chetumal
Section 6 of the Mayan Train route covers 255.8 kilometers of track and will be electrified double track. Includes stations in:
Airport-Tulum
Felipe Carrillo Puerto

In addition, in this section there will be a garage in Tulum, a workshop in Chetumal and a maintenance base in Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
Section 7 of the Mayan Train: From Chetumal to Escárcega
Section 7 begins in Chetumal. It will have 254.5 kilometers of simple railway and will connect Quintana Roo and Campeche.
It will only have one station in:
xpujil.
In addition, section 7 of the Mayan Train will have three stops.
Nicholas Bravo
Conhuas (Calakmul)
Centenary.
There are still no images of what these terminals would be like. The Mayan Train route ends at the Escárcega station, in Section 2.
When will the Mayan Train be ready?
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has insisted that the Mayan Train begin operations in December 2023. At the beginning of April, during his monthly supervision tour of the Yucatán Peninsula, the president reiterated that the work will not stop.
How much will the Mayan Train ticket cost?
The price of the Mayan Train ticket for the inhabitants of the area will be subsidized by the Government and, it is expected that for the section that goes from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, the price will be equivalent to that of public transport, that is, about 50 pesos per single trip for locals, revealed last September Rogelio Jiménez Pons, then director of the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur).
The official specified that for tourists, the cost for this same section would be between 40 and 50 dollars, that is, between 800 and a thousand pesos, since they will have additional services such as restaurants.
