These cenotes were born by the impact of a meteorite

Chicxulub, located 45 km from Mérida, is hardly a town, a port with crystalline waters, a little-visited corner -compared to others- of the Yucatán peninsula where, nevertheless, it lives submerged under 600 meters of sediment half a crater born of the largest collision of a meteorite with the Earth. This simple town is, without a doubt, the most important place in the history of the planet: 66 million years ago, the impact of a meteorite of about 11 km caused the extinction of a large part of terrestrial life and, over time, It allowed humans (homo sapiens barely emerged 200 to 300 thousand years ago) to evolve, without the threat of the then kings of this planet: the dinosaurs.

The footprint of a meteorite I ♡ Chicxulub, says a sign with enormous pieces on the pier of the port of this town. Along the coast you can see some houses, palapas with lounge chairs and not much else. Behind the ocean, you can see mirrors of water. Seen from the sky, however, the port offers a unique image: a semicircle of turquoise lights that completes the submerged edge of the crater that was produced by the fall of the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Seen from the ground, this almost magical row of points are cenotes: bodies of fresh water partially covered by walls and stretches of rocky soil. Inside them, the stalactites and stalagmites, huge hanging roots of trees grown on the surface and the mixture between turquoise, green and deep blue of the water (due to the mixture with algae and other aquatic vegetation) create a supernatural landscape.

Nobody suspects that such beauty is due to the fact that, due to the strong impact of the meteorite, the soft limestone that was found in the marine subsoil has been left on the surface. Perhaps the Port of Chicxulub has not managed to capture more than the attention of geologists and scientists because the most beautiful cenotes are not exactly the closest to the town. However, it is worth visiting and reaching the edge of the crater, knowing that you are standing on a unique place in the history of the Earth.
